Running is personally my favorite workout. I like the satisfied feeling I get after I finish a run. I run to stay fit, motivated, and relieve stress. It also gets me out of the house or else I'd be sitting in front of my laptop all day. Here are some tips I've gathered for new runners or those who want to become better runners. Keep in mind that not all of these may be accommodating to everyone, so pick and choose which ones you think will work for you!
1. Run in the morning
I've found that running in the mornings is a great way to start off the day. Although it can be hard to pull yourself out of bed, I promise you will be wide awake once to start running. I really enjoy running in the cool and fresh morning air since it does get really hot later in the day. So get a head start and beat the heat!
2. Eat bananas
Bananas, among many other foods, are great for runners! They are a great source of Potassium, Magnesium, and carbohydrates, which especially for runners, our bodies are constantly in demand for. I have a banana every morning and the days I don't, lemme tell you, I can definitely feel the difference when I go for a run. So eat yo bananas!
3. Rest up!
I know that it's summer and many of us (myself included) like to stay up late into the night doing who know's what lol. But as runners, sleep is a crucial part of the recovery process. When we run, we are putting high demand on our muscles and during sleep, our bodies work to replenish and strengthen our muscles. Getting enough sleep can help runners avoid many injuries. So runners, make sure you get your sleep!
4. Run with music
This one sounds easy enough. Cause it is! I bet many of you already have your headphones in as you're reading this. Might as well wear them when you go running, right? Listening to music can make your workout feel easier even though it really isn't. So trick your brain, and create a playlist that pumps you up during your run!
5. Get a good pair of running shoes
It is really important that you invest in a pair of nice running shoes. A pair of not-so-great shoes can hamper your performance as well as lead to injuries. Although good running shoes can be a little pricey, they will help prevent injuries and other pains. So when picking out the right running shoe for you, find a pair that fits your feet like a lock and key. We all run differently and have different feet, so it is important to know whether you pronate (your foot rolls inward when you run) or have a flat arch. Some retailers have trained specialists who can fit you with the right shoe for your running form and foot structure. Remember, a good pair of running shoes is probably one of the most important details to running!
6. Listen to your body
Know when you need to take it easy or even take the day off. Some days, we may be feeling sore from a previous workout that we haven't fully recovered from. On those days, take a break or go on a very easy run. Remember, ignoring any indicators your body is trying to tell you and pushing it may cause injuries.
But most importantly of all, enjoy yourself! Running should be fun, and it will be if you take time to enjoy the world around you as you fly by. Take care, runners, and I'll see you at the finish line :)
